What’s with my Nick Name – Roby (ryhmes with Moby)??

November 23, 2009 by Roby · 5 Comments

Back in 1989, I was being interviewed and hired (specially for my name!!!) for Siemens Automotive Ltd.  They had never had a Robert DYCK work for the company, Siemens, before and thus was born my nick name ROBY.  I was never teased about my name when working with my collegues at Siemens until a few years later.  More on this next.  But for 9 years with the company, whenever I gave my name over the phone to a client or customer, I would always just say that my name was ROBY(rhymes with Moby).  When asked for my last name, I would always say that I was hired specially for Siemens because my last name was Dyck ( pronounce Dick).

Another interesting anecdote that I am willing to share was when my very kind and generous neighbour (with only a slight sense of humour) decided to continue to shower my family with chocolate bars – Wait for it/Wait for it – called MR BIG!!   Honest, he never cracked a smile and so without a thought, after my family had eaten their fill of Cadbury’s MR BIG chocolate bars,  I was willing to share this new found source of delicious Canadian sweets with my collegues at Siemens.  Now you know the rest of the story…  Needless to say, we had a hoot with it, and, you always need to find humour in your name, heritage, or family quirks, right???  I wasn’t responsible for my last name.  Oh, by the way, my brother’s name is Harold (everyone calls him Harry!!!).

Let me hear your humorous story – please respond.

Take care,  and as always,

Roby the REALTOR sales pro from Prudential Select Realty Inc.

A person working at a business with me years back had a last name of Plopper.
His First name sounded like your last one.
It was not a shortened version of Richard.
He was popular with the ladies :)

I wonder, John, how Plopper handled his unique name? Did he use humor or not? If your out there, Plopper, tell us your story.

Oh, yes. He had a super sense of humor.
He was a dynamic salesperson and his name was a fantastic ice breaker/conversation starter for him.
AND who can forget that name, eh? :)

John is easy to forget so, I try to add humor too. Like that time I was in a bar talking to a young woman and she says, hey! di you know your shirt is on inside out! Well, yeah, why are you asking?

Although sometimes I’m remembered as that knuckle head with corny jokes.

I haven’t seen him in probably 12 years so, not sure what he’s up to.
Nice guy though and also a very good photographer.

Awesome. Hope Plopper logs in and sends his perspective. We all could use a few more laughs.
